The goodie bag

Every time one of my kids has a party or goes to one there is the dreaded goodie bag. You know, plastic bag filled with toys that will end up on the floor or impaling your foot as you walk into your child’s room. They aren't cheap to fill either. You don't want to be the mom known as giving out the crappy goodie bags. So you gotta fill ‘em up! Who started this "goodie bag movement" anyway? We didn't have these when I was growing up. You went to a party ate some cake watched your friend open presents and home you went. Well, it stops today in my house! No more plastic goodie bags!!!
Chloe is having her 1/2 birthday this weekend. Being born on Christmas she never really has a birthday. Usually people forget it's even her birthday all together. So, we started a few years ago with having it in June so that she could have friends over to celebrate. This year she wants to have a sleep over. While making plans for said party, we talked about games they could play and her cake and decorations. I told her I wasn't keen on giving out crap bags (goodie bags not actual bags of crap). She looked a little bummed. I asked her if she wanted to make some tote bags. She was cool with that.
So yesterday we spent the day sewing tote bags for her friends instead. Chloe did the pattern cutting and pinning together and I ironed and sewed them together. We put lip gloss, nail polish, and a hair tie in the bags and called it good. The total for all four bags was less than $20.00 ( of course I had a ton of fabric in my craft room). Crap bags cost way more than that! I guess they would still be considered goodie bags... But they are cute, re-usable (won't end up in a landfill) and what girl doesn't like a new bag?
